Freedom School Program

Pike is hosting the Freedom School Program at Central Elementary School. This program is provided by IU Indianapolis, Literacy & Civic Engagement Department and is funded by the National Defense Fund. It is a 5-week program for students who will be entering 1st – 6th grade in the fall. It will be held June 10-July 12 from 8:00-3:00 p.m. We are still accepting applications at this time. However, there is limited enrollment and enrollment will be on a first come, first served basis.

Freedom School is a literacy and civic engagement summer program. The program provides an activity-oriented curriculum to help readers and non-readers fall in love with books: the stories, the characters, the pictures, the ideas and the values; and to give non-readers an overwhelming desire to read—which is a basic step toward doing it. The program is a great fit for students who need reading encouragement. Because this is a program run by IU Indianapolis college interns with a project director and site manager, additional support services offered during the academic year are not available.  Students that attend this program must demonstrate academic readiness, behavior, and have regular school attendance.

If you are interested in signing your child up for this program, please complete the Enrollment Form and Consent Form no later than May 30, 2024.  Send them to
